South Korea, officially known as the Republic of Korea (ROK) (Korean: 대한민국, IPA: [tɛː.han.min.ɡuk̚], listen (help·info)) is an East Asian country on the southern half of the Korean Peninsula. To the north, it is bordered by North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea), with which it was united until 1945. To the west, across the Yellow Sea, lies China and to the southeast, across the Korea Strait, lies Japan.
남한(South Korea)의 공식 국명은 대한민국(the Republic of Korea)이며, 동북 아시아 한반도 남쪽에 자리잡고 있다.
북으로는 1945년까지 한나라 였던 북한(Democratic People's Republic of Korea)와 마주하고 있으며,
서쪽으로는 황해(the Yellow Sea)를 사이에 두고 중국과, 동남쪽으로는 대한 해협(the Korea Strait)을 끼고
일본과 접하고 있다.
Korea traces its founding to 2333 BCE by Dangun Wanggeom. Archaeological research shows that Koreans occupied the peninsula since the Lower Paleolithic period with territories expanding as far as mainland China and eastern Russia during the Gojoseon period. Korea's history has been turbulent throughout with the last emperor of Korea dating back to the age of the Korean Empire. Since the establishment of the modern republic in 1948, South Korea struggled with the aftermath of the Japanese control (1910-1945), the Korean War (1950-1953), and decades of authoritarian governments, undergoing five major constitutional changes. While the government officially embraced Western-style democracy from its founding, presidential elections suffered from rampant irregularities. It was not until 1987 that direct and fair presidential elections were held, largely prompted by popular demonstrations.
한국의 역사는 시조 단군 왕검이 나라를 일으킨 기원전 2333년으로 거슬러 올라간다. 고고학 연구가 진행되면서 한국인이 전기 구석기 시대 이래 한반도의 주인으로 살아왔으며, 고조선 시대 영토가 중국 본토와 동부 러시아까지 뻗쳤다는 사실이 드러났다. 그간 한국의 역사는 곧 격동의 역사였으며, 지난 대한 제국 시대 마지막 황제를 맞았다.
1948년 근대 공화정이 수립되었으나, 일제 강점(1910-1945)의 후유증에 시달리는 상황에서 한국 전쟁(1950-1953)과 맞닥뜨리게 되었으며, 그 후 수십년간 독재가 이뤄지는 한편 다섯 차례에 걸쳐 헌법이 대폭 개정되었다. 정부는 개국과 함께 서구식 민주주의를 받아들였으나 대선 과정에서는 부정과 편법이 만연했다. 1987년 대규모 민중 시위가 일어나면서 비로소 직접적이고 공정한 대통령 선거가 이뤄지게 되었다.
South Korea had one of the fastest economic development in the world since the 1960s and is now the 3rd largest economy in Asia and the 12th largest economy in the world. Many developing nations refer to this progress as the "Miracle on the Han River", using South Korea's success story as a role model. South Korea is both part of the CIA and IMF list of advanced economies, and also is assorted as a high-income nation. In addition, South Korea is a Next Eleven country, forming the G20 Industrial Nations.
한국은 1960년대 이후 전세계를 통틀어 경제 성장이 가장 빨랐던 나라로 꼽힌다. 지금은 아시아 세번째, 세계 12위 규모의 경제 대국이 되었다. 유수 개발 도상국들이 한국의 이러한 발전상을 '한강의 기적'이라 일컫으며 본보기로 삼고 있다. CIA와 IMF 모두 한국을 선진국, 고소득 국가로 분류하고 있다. 한국은 또한 차세대 브릭스 국가(Next-11)인 동시에 G20회원국이기도 하다.
South Korea is one of the world's most technologically and scientifically advanced countries; it is the only country in the world having nationwide 100Mbit/s broadband internet access, full HDTV broadcasting, DMB, WiBro and 3G HSDPA. It is currently the most wired nation in the world, with 90 per cent of homes connected to cheap broadband internet.[19] South Korea is a global leader in electronics, computers, digital displays, semiconductor devices, mobile phones and hightech gadgets, headed by the two chaebols, Samsung and LG. South Korea also has the world's 3rd biggest steel producer, POSCO and is the 5th largest automobile manufacturing nation, headed by Hyundai Kia Automotive Group. South Korea is the world's largest shipbuilder, lead by several multinational corporations such as Hyundai Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries. Other import!!ant industries of South Korea include robotics and biotechnology, with the world's second humanoid robot, EveR-1 and the world's first cloned dog, Snuppy.
한국은 현재 과학, 기술 분야에서 전세계에서 가장 앞선 나라로 꼽힌다. 100Mbit/s 급 광대역 인터넷이 전국에 보급된 유일한 나라이며, DMB, WiBro, 3G HSDPA(고속하향패킷접속) 기술을 보유한 동시에 HDTV 방송이 본격적으로 이뤄지고 있는 유일한 나라이기도 하다. 또한 한국은 90% 가구가 저렴한 광대역 인터넷에 접속돼 있을만큼 인터넷 망이 가장 촘촘하게 뻗어있는 나라이기도 하다. 삼성과 엘지라는 두 재벌 기업을 필두로 전자, 컴퓨터, 디지털 디스플레이, 반도체, 휴대 전화, 그 밖에 각종 첨단 가전 분야에서 선두를 달리고 있다. 세계 3대 철강 기업 POSCO의 국적국이기도 하며, 다섯번 째로 차를 많이 생산하는 나라이기도 하다. Hyundai Kia 그룹이 그 선두에 서 있다.
현대 중공업, 삼성 중공업과 같은 다국적 대기업에 힘입어 현재 세계 1위 조선국으로 올라섰다. 그 밖에 로봇, 생명공학 같은 분야도 빠뜨릴 수 없는데 세계 두번째로 개발한 인간형(휴머노이드) 로봇 EveR-1과 최초 복제견 Snuppy를 대표적 성과로 꼽을 수 있다
